12 Combustion and explosion of hydrogen
Teacher
experiment / Safety goggles! Take hydrogen from a tank only!
* Left: The top of a
Cola can is removed by scissors. * Make a tiny hole is made
into the bottom of the can.
* Photo 2: Invert
the can and position it on a stone slab.
* Blow hydrogen gas from
a tank into the can while you close the upper hole by your forefinger tip.
* Close the hydrogen
tank and remove it. * Light the hydrogen at the hole. Wait a few
minutes.
Observations
right
and photo 3: 1. Hydrogen
burns at the tiny opening showing a fade flame. 2.
After
1 - 2 minutes a soft noise can be heared. soft noise can be heared. 3.
the
small flame flares back into the can. 4.
A big bang can be heared while the can starts like a rocket.
Explantion:
Oxyhydrogen
gas (which was mixed by replacing burning hydrogen by air) explodes.
