So08 Potatoes and fungi
are growing in the soil
* Left: After some weeks
in a flower pot green stems with leaves have developed from a potato
while roots were growing into the soil.
* Cover the lower parts of this potato
plant with soil in a bigger flower pot. Keep it wet enough through
the summer.
* Middle: 5 new potatoes have
grown in the earth, only the cover of the old potato
was left.
* Right: Fungi can be
seen in huge numbers on the stump of a birch cut down a year before. In
the soil each of these plants has thin threads measuring many meters.
They digest the roots of the
birch, while the hats of the fungi distribute millions of brown cells
for reproduction.
