Acid rain is "result of air pollution by sulfur dioxide" (S. S. Zumdahl)

More and more exhaust and chimney fumes are released to the air since men burn more and more fuel to power their engines. This pollution results in the synthesis of rain water containing acids of sulfur and nitrogen.
So rain sometimes has the acidity of vinegar:
Soil and waters are polluted by acids, stones and metals are destroyed.
