salt 02
Sodium
chloride synthesis from sodium and the "salt maker"chlorine
(Only
for experienced chemistry teachers. Sodium is extremely reactive and corrosive.
What you
need A 5-ml syringe full of chlorine
(with a blunted needle), Liquemin injection bottle
with a sodium piece 1 x 1 x 1 mm, micro spirit burner, tray containing
tile in it, clothes peg , a spatula full of potassium permaganate, dropper
bottle with conc hydrochloric acid.
Experiment *
Left
Add conc. HCl by a syringe to KMnO4 in a modified Obendrauf
apparatus. Replace the charcoal (C) absorber by a syringe to take out 5
ml of chlorine*).

2: Cut the tiny piece of clean sodium, * place it on the bottom of
the liquemin bottle, heat the Na for melting.
*
Slowly blow 5 ml chorine against the liquid metal. REMOVE
THE BURNER AS SOON AS THE REACTION STARTS. Observations

3:
The
elements
react in a bright yellow flame leaving (Right) a white brittle substance.
Explanation:
The
saltsodium
chloride is formed from its elements: 2
Na(s) + Cl2(g) --> 2 NaCl(s) *)
Safe alternative
for production of chlorine a)
Prepare a hood for the absorption of chlorine: Cover the inner side of
a marmelade glass by tissue paper and soak it with 2M NaOH. b) Cover
a 10-mL ampoule for gas production with a turned stopper immediately after
adding of HCl and place it under the hood for gas absorption. c) After
2 minutes open the containers for a moment to take out a syringe full of
chlorine.
