You have made sulfate ions
by mixing conc sulfuric
acid and water. Sulfate ions you will meet again during
your experiments with the car battery.
Barium
chloride solution is a reagent for sulfate ions.
* Put drops of the following
solutions on a plastic surface: Sulfuric acid [H2SO4(aq)],
sodium sulfate [Na2SO4(aq)], zinc sulfate [ZnSO4(aq)],
copper(II) sulfate [CuSO4(aq)].
* Add a drop of transparent
barium chloride solution to each of these drops.
Observation
(Photo):Each
time the transparent liquids react forming a white solid
Explanation:
Each
time a white solid ofof barium sulfate [BaSO4(s)]
is formed by the barium ions of the reagent [(Ba2+(aq)
]
and the sulfate ions [SO42-(aq)
] of
the solutions to be tested.
