Sulfuric acid produces
carbon and vapour from sugar
(TEACHER EXPERIMENT)


* Left photo: Fill one third of a 4-ml vial with sugar.
* Wet its surface by some micro drops of water.
* Middle photo: Add as much conc. sulfuric acid as the sugar can absorb.
   The mixture gets a black colour.
* Right photo: The mixture swells releasing vapour and a black foam:

sugar + sulfuric acid (c)  -------------------------> carbon foam + water vapour
