For
the following experiments you need a spirit burner. Now you will learn how you
can make one and use it safely.
Material
(Photo 1)
Tray,
1 high ampoule (5 ml), and
1 broad ampoule (5 ml) with a stopper, stopper
of an infusion bottle Leukosilk, sticky tape, toilette paper, tongs, scissors,
plastic dropper bottles, red permanent marker toilette
paper, methylated spirit, lime water.
Experiment
1. The 2 ampoules were
sterilized by the teacher in boiling water.
2. Replace the label
by a piece of Leukosilk and write a big F on it (for flammable).
3. Remove the metal lid and the stopper.
Clean the ampoules with flowing water.
4. After drying use
the stopper of an infusion bottle as a stand for the high ampoule.
5. Put the ampoule into
the tray and fill it with methylated spirit.
6. Half a piece of toilette
paper, twist a wick from it. Push it into the ampoule. Leave only 3 mm of wick
outside.
7. Lit the burner (Photo
2).
8. Put the broad ampoule above the
flame (Photo 3 and 4).
9. Look for a covering on the inside.
Explain
your observations during extinguishing the flame.
